School Extension

Dear Parents,

On the 22 January 2014, together with over 200 of you, we welcomed the members of the European School Frankfurt Admin Board to our school for their meeting and expressed our displeasure with regards to the unsatisfactory capacity / infrastructure issues at the ESF. At the end of this meeting we believed that a solution had been agreed by all parties and that only the final details of ”who pays what” needed to be agreed / approved by the relevant stakeholders.

However, more than two months of valuable time has passed with no concrete solution agreed by all parties. While there have been many declarations of intent, press releases, announcements, letters and e-mail exchanges and even a solution proposed with the construction of a temporary childminding building financed by the ECB on the site of the Ernst-Reuter-school. Unfortunately, today we are no closer to a solution than we were on 22 January !. It is already clear that the proposed temporary child minding building, even if it was to be constructed (financed by whomever), will not be ready to be handed over to the school and the parents' association before November 2014 i.e. at least two months later than the start of the 2014/15 school year.

Thank you for showing up on January 22!

Dear Parents,

A big Thank You to everyone who showed up this morning to show your support for the urgency of our cause: ESF Extension Now! The turnout was very good, and the arriving authorities were impressed - For example, Mr. Kari Kivinen, Secretary General for all European Schools (photo on the left), took pictures and referred to it several times during the Admin Board meeting. A few more photos can be found in our "Photo Gallery" section.

Thank you also to the school caterer, Menütaxi, for providing coffee and pretzels for everybody free of charge.

And thank you to everyone who signed our petition to Chancellor Merkel. We collected more than 1,000 signatures which are being sent to Ms. Merkel today.

A summary from today's Admin Board Meeting:

The city of Frankfurt and school Management have developed a modular building solution which encompasses a canteen, a sports hall and enough class rooms for all PP and P1 classes. We will keep you informed as soon as we have a final decision.

Follow-Up Letter to Chancellor Merkel

Dear Parents,

As you may be aware, Germany so far has been unwilling and unable to discuss, let alone provide funding for, the Extension of the European School Frankfurt (ESF) which is an essential part of the infrastructure for employees of the European Central Bank (ECB), European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and the newly established Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) located in Frankfurt.

The Parents' Association of the ESF has been involved in lengthy discussions with the authorities and has also directed several communications towards Dr. Angela Merkel, the Federal Chancellor, so far without any response. Nevertheless we are sending another letter to Dr. Merkel today (English and French translations).

Dear parents,

A new year has begun and there is still no solution to the pressing problems at the European School Frankfurt. While there are some very interesting discussions taking place for a possible expansion of the school, unfortunately there has still not been a commitment by the Federal Republic of Germany to fund this proposal / identified short term solution.

It seems that the responsible employees of the Federal Ministry of Education and Science do not understand the responsibility that the Federal Republic of Germany has accepted, with the establishment of several European institutions in Frankfurt, for the children of employees of these institutions! By the end of January 2014, the financing for the smooth operation of the ESF as well as the short term extension proposal absolutely necessary for the admission of new eligible students (for September 2014) must be ensured! Otherwise, the implementation of the timetable for the completion of the construction work until the end of August will not be feasible!

As you know from our recent publications as well as from the petition that you have been requested to sign, there will be a very important meeting in this regard in the European School on January 22, 2014, i.e. the Board of Directors meeting of the ESF. This will be joined by representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science (Germany), the Secretary General of the European Schools, Mr. Kari Kivinen, representatives of the European Commission, the ECB, EIOPA, the school directors and representatives of the school as well as representatives of teachers, students, staff and last but not least, the parents.

The board meeting begins at 09:00 hrs.

It is important that we as parents show our frustration with the situation! There should be as many parents as possible to receive the various delegates at our school! We should welcome the various stakeholders when they arrive in front of the school and let them know our wishes and demands.

Since some of these stakeholders will arrive at the school very early, we suggest that you  bring your children to school in time and join us in front of the secondary school building by  8:30 am. Coffee and pretzels will be organised by the Parents' Association!

You should make time for this! This is about the education of your children! If only a handful of parents show up that would show the delegates that there is little interest in the topic! That would certainly not be conducive to our demands!
